SAFE water SAVES lives.
March 22 is when we celebrate water and raise awareness of the nearly 2 billion people that, unfortunately, still live without access to safe water. The United Nations have called for March 22 to be “World Water Day”, and this is part of the UN Global Goal 6 - Clean Water and Sanitation: “ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all”.

The importance of safe water cannot be any more obvious than in the healthcare sector. Clean and safe water is the basis for any performing lab - clinical or pharmaceutical - and many therapeutic interventions. Indeed, any patient who is subjected to infusion treatment needs to feel confident of the source. For example, people who are on hemodialysis treatment must be able to trust the very source of their treatment: “water to rinse their blood”.

That “source” can be purified by water treatment systems that are available on the market. But did you know that glass can also be used in water treatment?
In the words of the “International Year of Glass22 committee”:
“Green glass can be upcycled to hydrophobic glass particles that can replace sand in actual water treatment. These particles can then remove any unwanted heavy metals, organic matter and microplastics from water.”
Nipro acknowledges the importance of water, as it has its own water purification systems in place for its hemodialysis patients. On top, Nipro also acknowledges that water is an essential resource in its glass forming process and uses this resource with the utmost care and efficiency. Conserving water across the manufacturing network is one of our top priorities, and we have been able to reduce the consumption of water for Injection by 32%. Continued measures to further conserve this vital resource will be taken.

In conclusion, SAFE water SAVES lives – and when we SAVE water all together, we SAVE even more lives.
Things we can all do:
-
Use just how much water is needed - don’t overuse. Be sure to close a tap when washing dishes or brushing teeth. Enjoy sweet and short showers. Bathtubs require buckets more of water compared to a shower of 5-10 minutes.
-
Get together with friends or family and organize a clean-up project alongside a river close to your house.
